OTOPLASTY
WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?
Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, is a surgical procedure that reshapes, resizes, or repositions the ears to achieve a more harmonious facial appearance. It can be used to correct prominent ears, congenital deformities, or size alterations.
Reasons for Otoplasty
Prominent Ears: One of the most common reasons for otoplasty. The surgery can “pin” the ears closer to the head, reducing their prominence.
Congenital Deformities: Conditions like microtia (underdeveloped ears) or other congenital deformities can be addressed with ear surgery.
Size Alteration: Some individuals opt for otoplasty to reduce the size of large ears or to enhance the symmetry between both ears.
The Consultation Process
The journey to ear reshaping begins with a consultation with our surgeon. This session allows our surgeon to understand your aesthetic goals, review your medical history, and assess the current state of your ears. A tailored surgical plan is crafted based on this comprehensive evaluation.
The Surgery
Otoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia for younger patients. Incisions are usually made behind the ear to minimize visible scarring. Through these incisions, cartilage is reshaped, removed, or added to achieve the desired appearance. The ears are then sutured into their new position.
The Recovery Period
Recovery from otoplasty is generally swift. Patients may experience some swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and by wearing a protective headband, especially while sleeping. This helps in maintaining the new ear position and prevents any accidental tugging or pulling.
Most patients return to their daily activities within a week. However, it’s essential to avoid activities that may impact the ears for at least six weeks.
The Results
The results of otoplasty are immediately noticeable and become more refined as any post-operative swelling subsides. The procedure offers long-lasting results that can significantly boost one’s self-esteem and comfort in social situations.
