WHAT ARE VENEERS

Veneers are a type of ceramic tooth restoration. Veneers’ primary function is to improve the smile by changing the shape and colour of the teeth. The technology entails turning the tooth or a portion of it and covering it with a special shell – veneer. They are usually superimposed on the tooth’s visible outer surface.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF VENEERS?

There are different methods for making veneers. It can be carved from a single piece of ceramic or made using ceramic layering. The second method is more aesthetic because it uses materials of different shades and degrees of transparency, which helps to achieve maximum naturalness and similarity to a natural tooth.

Look at your teeth and you will see that they are not monochrome: at the gums, they are denser and darker, at the cutting edges they are more transparent and lighter.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VENEERS AND FILLINGS?

Veneers are more reliable than the restoration of teeth using photopolymer fillings. Because the veneer is one monolithic part, which is glued to each tooth separately using a thin layer of special glue – composite cement. In addition, the veneer is made of ceramic, which looks more natural, serves better, has greater strength and, accordingly, has a smaller volume (it turns out that the tooth will need to grind less).

A filling is, in simple words, a kind of plastic, it doesn’t look so beautiful and it is not so strong and it will be larger in volume. Although, of course, the filling has its advantages. For example, it is done right in the mouth, in one trip to the doctor, that is, it is a much faster process.

HOW LONG DOES THE ENTIRE VENEER PROCEDURE TAKE? WHAT STAGES DOES IT CONSIST OF?

In general, about three weeks.

The procedure looks like this. On the first visit to the doctor, the patient is examined. On the basis of the cast, temporary plastic overlays are made of the same shape as the future veneers and are installed on the teeth. After that, you can either immediately grind your teeth (about half an hour for one tooth) or walk around with the design of a new smile for a while, live, consult with relatives, etc. Within two to three weeks a technician in the laboratory is engaged in their manufacture. The technician needs to choose the most suitable colours, the degree of transparency, adjust the shape – in general, you can not rush here. During the patient’s second visit to the doctor, temporary overlays are removed and veneers are installed.

ON WHICH TEETH AND HOW MANY TEETH CAN VENEERS BE PLACED?

On any tooth, if we talk about their location in the mouth. The main thing is that the tooth has to be alive. The veneer is installed individually for each tooth separately, there is no “bridge” technology.
